First floor addition of a government aided school in our native village. The project was managed by a trust of elders & alumni of the school and funded by the generous contributions from various families of the village.
After careful structural consideration we retained the existing building which was 60 years old and added the first floor by following the same grid of columns, walls, beams and openings. The verandah grill was kept simple and light to ensure a good connect with the outdoor. Local materials like clay tiles, Athangudi tiles and reclaimed wood were used. The building was painted in white with a touch of yellow to add some cheerfulness for the kids.
